The PDC darts association has announced that Betfred will be the official sponsor for one of its main tournaments, in a record-breaking deal.
Betfred have signed up to sponsor the PDC World Matchplay tournament from next year. Founded in 1994, the World Matchplay is the PDC’s second oldest professional darts competition, and is held every July at the Winter Gardens venue in Blackpool.
Under the terms of the sponsorship deal, the tournament will be renamed as the Betfred World Matchplay from next year, and it will feature a record-breaking prize pool of £700,000, which represents an increase of £200,000 on previous stagings of the competition.
Speaking about the deal, the Chairman of the PDC, Barry Hearn, said that he was delighted that Betfred were involved with one of the biggest events in the world of darts and that their sponsorship would help his goal of increasing prize money across the PDC tournament circuit.
The World Matchplay has previously been sponsored by Stan James, Sky Bet and Betfair and since 2013 has been backed by BetVictor. It features 32 of the PDC’s leading players in a knockout format competing for the Phil Taylor trophy, named after the legendary 16-time winner of the World Matchplay. The current champion is Gary Anderson, only the eighth player to win the competition.
Commenting on the sponsorship arrangement, the found of Betfred, Fred Done said that the deal continued his company’s relationship with the PDC:
We have always enjoyed a great working relationship with Barry Hearn so I am delighted to have agreed to a deal to link up with Barry and the PDC to sponsor one of the biggest tournaments in world darts.”
