Whenever any woman has spoken about headlining WrestleMania, it’s always been considered a pipe-dream. Things have changed in recent years and in 2019, we’ve reached the stage where a women’s match headlining WrestleMania 35 is more likely to happen than not.
WrestleMania is the biggest show of the year and takes place at the MetLife Stadium in New York on April 7. It’s a major gamble for the main event (classified as the last match on the card) to be a women’s match but at present the possible men’s matches aren’t bringing in the ratings.
The Rise of Women’s Wrestling
Women’s wrestling has become hugely popular in recent years and without a reliance on such events as a bra and panties match. WWE has one major asset at present in the shape of former UFC star Ronda Rousey. She wrestled her first match for the company at WrestleMania 34 and has since gone on to become the Raw Women’s Champion.
A Triple Threat
The seeds have already been sown for her to be in a major match at WrestleMania 35. Current favourite is for her to take on Ireland’s Becky Lynch in the main event, but more likely is a triple threat match between Rousey, Lynch and Charlotte Flair, the daughter of the legendary Ric Flair.
Creating this match is going to take a bit of doing as Rousey is on the Raw brand and the others on Smackdown. The winner of the Women’s Royal Rumble match this month will win a WrestleMania title shot against the champion of her choosing.
That sorts out one challenger to Rousey and it’s likely to be Flair. Fitting Lynch into the match won’t be difficult as there’s already bad blood between her and Rousey. So, 9/4 at SkyBet on Rousey v Lynch v Flair as the WrestleMania 35 main event looks a good one.
