Boxing Day’s big race at Kempton will see ten horses at the start for the 15:05 32Red King George VI Chase. This looks an open with race with 2 previous winners and 2 Cheltenham Gold Cup Winners.
Open Race with Quality
2017 winner Might Bite is the current favourite at 10/3 whilst 2016’s winner Thistlecrack is currently 13/2. This year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup Winner Native River, who beat Might Bite the favourite that day, is 5/1. Coneygree, the 7/1 winner of the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2015, is 28/1 for this race.
Coneygree ran well at Cheltenham last month where he finished third in the BetVictor Handicap Chase. That day he couldn’t find the extra needed to win but held on well for third. He goes well in front and likes a drop of rain. Since his Gold Cup win, he’s been injury prone but he could be back to full fitness and run well at a big price. He’s a serious chaser and this race is for genuine stayers.
Bristol De Mai 13/2
Bristol De Mai won the big chase at Haydock a month ago and seems a different horse this season. But there are trust factors to consider away from Haydock. Last year he went off at 3/1 and finished 6th out of the 8 runners.
Politologue 5/1 & Waiting Patiently 9/2
Two seven year olds, who both need to prove they can stay, are Politologue and Waiting Patiently. These two could be the most progressive horses in the race.
Waiting Patiently has a huge engine and could be the most talented horse in the field. But he hasn’t been seen in a race for 312 days.
Politologue is a likeable horse but there are question marks about if he’s top class. In addition to that, he idles in front and can boil up before the start. But he’s a brilliant jumper and this could be the chance he needs to prove he’s the real thing.
At the age of 17 Marc started working for the local Echo in Southampton and even made the sports pages himself when selected for Hampshire youth. But a serious back injury, sustained after a car crash on his way back from a party from Bournemouth, put paid to his sporting career. So now he writes about it.
